At Udna Cherra Tea Estate, Sreemangal, the lush greenery is deceiving. Hidden among the natural beauty, the workers of the tea estate experience some of the harshest conditions imaginable. Despite having Bangladeshi nationality, they are still considered outsiders and are marginalized and exploited by the industry they work in, a legacy of the country’s British colonial masters.
The tea workers in this hilly region earn very little money, making it almost impossible to make ends meet. They live in a remote area, far from towns and cities, and lack access to basic necessities. This is especially evident during the winter months when temperatures drop drastically, making it difficult for these families to survive.
Recently, we had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these tea workers. We distributed warm blankets to 160 families, providing them with a much-needed relief from the cold weather. It was heartening to see the happiness on their faces as they received the blankets, knowing that they would have some respite from the biting cold.
We discovered that the locals of Udna Cherra had never received any assistance from outsiders. So, it was a unique opportunity for us to make a difference and provide them with the support they needed.
Each of the blankets we distributed is custom manufactured, weighing around 1.5 kg and measuring 7.5 feet by 5.5 feet, making them perfect for two adults to use. Unlike the common blankets, these blankets are durable and long-lasting, providing warmth for several winters to come. It’s gratifying to know that we can make a difference in the lives of these tea workers by providing them with an essential item like a warm blanket.
It’s a sad reality that many of us take basic necessities like warm clothing for granted. For these tea workers, having a warm blanket can make a world of difference, especially during the harsh winter months. Our small act of kindness can have a significant impact on the lives of these marginalized families.
Despite living in such challenging circumstances, the tea workers we met were hardworking, resilient, and grateful for our support. It was humbling to see the strength and determination of these families and their unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
Our distribution of warm blankets to the tea workers at Udna Cherra Tea Estate, Sreemangal, is just a small step towards making a difference. However, we believe that every little gesture of kindness can have a lasting impact, and we’re committed to doing our part to help those in need.
We hope that our initiative inspires others to join us in supporting marginalized communities and making a difference in their lives. By working together, we can create a better world for everyone, one small act of kindness at a time.
